Below are More Ways that The Academy Way provides a unique child-loving and challenging environment for students with Dyslexia, ADHD and Non-Traditional Learners.
Comfortable & Flexible Learning
The Academy Way is Comfortable & Flexible Learning. We believe all children should sit, stand, and/or do their schoolwork in a manner that is comfortable to them. Besides, who of us adults want to be uncomfortable when we are at work?
Well, we believe kids are not different. To help with this, we offer students seating that swivels, rocks, and moves, as well as stationary options. Additionally, tables are at different heights. We will even let kids lay on the floor if that makes them comfortable!
We believe all children have a GREATNESS to be discovered and cultivated. What makes their head and heart happy? That’s the question we keep asking them to help them discover what their GREATNESS could be.
The Academy Way is to focus our time on the GREATNESS (strengths) of our students, not their weaknesses. We help our children understand who they are, what their strengths are, and how to minimize their weaknesses. This is what we believe will prove of most value to them in real-life. Their GREATNESS is what will make them special and we will help them realize and understand this.
We believe providing our students with Individual Attention is critical to their ultimate academic success. Our students receive dedicated, individualized and genuine attention from our teachers and school staff during each of their school days. With this, our Structued Literacy groups are limited to no more than 4 students. In all of our other academic classes, there are 10 or fewer students. Overall, we maintain a teacher:student ratio of 1:6.
Our students possess some or all of the following characteristics:
- Average IQ
- Dislike of school
- Lacking self-confidence
- Learning challenges
- Low self-esteem
- Labeled an “underachiever”
- Difficulty sitting still
- Poor writing skills
- Poor reading and/or comprehension skills
- Severe reading deficiencies
- Specials needs or general education
- Struggles in a traditional school setting
- Thinks outside the box
Progress Not Perfection
The Academy Way values and focuses on Progress Not Perfection. Each child enters school with different experiences, resources and understanding of the world that they bring with them. So, we assess our students when they enter our schools, and this dictates where we start with them with regard to the instruction they receive.
We provide progress monitoring continuously throughout the year. We also give parents weekly feedback in the students’ GREATNESS Reports. Finally, we measure students’ growth at the beginning of the year, continuously throughout the school year, and at the end of the school year in both Literacy and Math using the aimwebPlus system.
Our Year-Round Calendar is another unique aspect of our schools of The Academy Way. We keep kids engaged in learning every month throughout a calendar year. We believe this is necessary for their long-term success and our school calendars are created with this in mind. Ultimately, our finish line is not the end of May or June, but rather it is high school graduation.
Our continuum of learning is viewed as a marathon, not a sprint. We are proud of our committment to our students through our year-round approach. We believe it helps our teachers and students continue to be refreshed and ready to teach and learn. Each of our year-round calendars are specific to our individual school locations and what is best for the kids who attend it.
